Our History
Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religious tradition that was formed from the consolidation of two religions: Unitarianism and Universalism. In America, the Universalist Church of America was founded in 1793, and the American Unitarian Association in 1825. After consolidating in 1961, these faiths became the new religion of Unitarian Universalism through the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
The Inland Northwest Unitarian Universalist Community was formed in 2020 when a contingent of members of the existing Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane desired a closer connection to and involvement with the national UUA and its values than was being pursued by the minister and other members of the congregation. Separation was a difficult decision and left the new church without a physical home. However, dedication to the principles and values of the UUA inspired and encouraged the group to organize itself using the model of Dynamic Governance, become financially stable, and establish a relationship with the Westminster Congregational Church, where we have an office and an opportunity to conduct periodic in-person services.
We are proud to have a quarter time minister, Rev. Crystal Zerfoss. We are fortunate to have our Soul Weaving Circle, which works hard to create weekly Zoom services for our members. Now a member congregation of the UUA, we are pursing our community and social action goals through the efforts of our various Circles. Building upon our long history, we embark on a new mission to provide a home for the fundamental principles of Unitarian Universalism.
