Unitarian Universalism is a living, evolving faith. Our tradition has grown and changed significantly from the Christian roots of its Unitarian and Universalist heritages—and it continues to evolve as we listen, learn, and discern together.

In June 2024, UUs at General Assembly took an important step in that ongoing journey. Through a democratic vote, they adopted new language describing the values that unite us. Rather than the familiar Seven Principles and Six Sources, our faith is now expressed through six Shared Values:

• Interdependence — We honor the interdependent web of all existence and acknowledge our place in it.
• Pluralism — We are all sacred beings, diverse in culture, experience, and theology.
• Justice — We work to build diverse, multicultural Beloved Communities where all feel welcome and can thrive.
• Transformation — We adapt to the changing world.
• Generosity — We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope.
• Equity —We declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion.

A Living Faith, Shaped Together

These values didn’t emerge overnight. They grew from years of discernment, conversation, writing, revision, and democratic decision-making. Our UUA bylaws call for this language to be reviewed and revised every 15 years, recognizing that our understanding of Unitarian Universalism has continued to develop throughout our history.

These aren’t simply words on a page—they invite us to consider how we live our faith together.
