Live Streaming and Pictures at Local Gatherings
There was a time when live streaming and pictures of local events was low risk and beneficial to include people who couldn’t attend and document community support.
Unfortunately, the risk-benefit analysis has shifted. People’s identities can be exposed, and footage can be used to target people who are marginalized and already at risk. Robert Reich has raised the concern that ICE is searching posts and news clippings, but others can also use the pictures for purposes inconsistent with our values. Not just faces, but clothing and other personal items can be used to identify people. Even pictures of large crowds can be enlarged to identify individuals.
For now, it seems prudent to offer protection for those with whom we show up. Let us avoid live streams and pictures of anyone who has not given us permission to take a photograph of them. We can still carefully photograph ourselves, our banner, and our signs. But again, let’s ask permission.
If you plan to attend any protest — remember to stay safe; stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times; and if you are not certain about how to stay safe, read about protest safety online or ask a friend who is more experienced in attending protests safely.
Don’t go alone, always go with a friend!
