Where East Meets West Meets Now: Shared Values Across Traditions

As part of a new collaboration between the Inland Northwest Unitarian Universalist Community (INUUC) and Clear Sky Retreat Center in Cranbrook, BC, the experimental project Lighthouse Spokane is exploring emerging “metamodern” approaches to spirituality—perspectives that seek to hold complexity, multiple truths, and hopeful engagement in uncertain times.

To launch this partnership, INUUC welcomes Buddhist teacher and author Catherine Pawasarat Sensei as guest speaker for a special Soul Weaving service.

Drawing from Vajrayana Buddhist and Western Mystery spiritual traditions, Pawasarat will explore resonances with Unitarian Universalism’s Seven Principles and reflect on the threads that weave these traditions together. Together we will consider how these time-tested paths offer practical tools for cultivating peace, mutual understanding, and collective transformation in today’s world.

Catherine Pawasarat is the resident teacher and co-founder of Clear Sky Meditation Center. A student of metaphysics and Western spiritual traditions, she lived in Kyoto, Japan for 20 years working as an advocacy photojournalist. Beginning in 1998, she trained daily with Buddhist teacher Achariya Doug Duncan (Qapel) in an intensive spiritual apprenticeship rare in the modern West, continuing until Qapel’s passing in 2024. Both are lineage holders of the teachings of Namgyal Rinpoche. Together they taught through PlanetDharma.com and co-authored the best-selling book Wasteland to Pureland (2018).

About Clear Sky Meditation Center: Clear Sky is a retreat center in the British Columbia Rockies dedicated to contemplative practice and conscious community.
